Zu kalt, zu windig und dann noch die verrückten Regelungen vom RKI

Zur Zeit ist hier in Namibia das Wetter nicht "normal". Es ist für diese Jahreszeit viel zu kalt. Nachts haben wir Temperaturen von 11°C bis 16°. Auch Tagsüber müsste es viel wärmer sein. Dazu kommt ein ungewöhnlich starker Wind aus Nordwest. Zum Teil mit über 40 kt, was ca. 70 km/h entspricht. Und das gute Wetter ist meistens weit im Nordosten.

Das bedeutet, dass man früh starten und mit schwachem Steigen in niedrigen Höhen erst einmal ca. 150-200 km fliegen muss, um dann im guten Wetter zu sein. Das aber ist nicht unsere Fliegerei. Deshalb sind wir jetzt einige Tage nicht geflogen und haben uns das Leben hier schön gemacht. Den Pool genutzt, Sundowner erlebt, Gamedrive gemacht, nach Mariental und an dem Hardap Dam gefahren und "Die Seele baumeln gelassen."

Die Stimmung hier ist trotzdem sehr gut. Viele Segelflieger sind hier (Bitterwasser ist ausgebucht) und es gibt viele interessante Gespräche. Eines ist natürlich die Entscheidung des RKI's Namibia zum Virusvariantengebiet zu erklären.

Dafür hat hier Niemand Verständnis. Fakt ist, dass ein Land mit einer Inzidenz von 444 (Deutschland) Länder wie Namibia mit einer Inzidenz von 3 (in Worten: Drei) oder Südafrika mit einer Inzidenz von 9 für gefährlich erklärt. In den deutschen Medien heißt es: In Namibia hat sich innerhalb der letzten zwei Wochen die Inzident verdreifacht. Klar von 1 auf 3. Und in Südafrika verdoppelt. Von 4 auf 9. 

Durch diese Panikmache und die daraus folgenden Maßnahmen sind wir extrem betroffen. Leider hat es schon die ersten Stornierungen gegeben.

Aber wir bleiben zuversichtlich. Hier ist es schön. Die Sonne scheint, uns geht es gut und Corona gibt es hier nicht.

At the moment the weather here in Namibia is not "normal". It is much too cold for this time of the year. At night we have temperatures from 11°C to 16°. Also during the day it should be much warmer. In addition, there is an unusually strong wind from the northwest. Partly with more than 40 kt, which corresponds to about 70 km/h. And the good weather is mostly far to the northeast.

This means that you have to start early and fly about 150-200 km with a weak climb at low altitudes to be in the good weather. But that is not our flying style. That's why we didn't fly for a few days and enjoyed our life here. We used the pool, had a sundowner, did a gamedrive, drove to Mariental and the Hardap Dam and "let our souls dangle".

The atmosphere here is still very good. Many glider pilots are here (Bitterwasser is fully booked) and there are many interesting conversations. One thing is of course the RKI's decision to declare Namibia a virus variant area.

Nobody here has any understanding for that. The fact is that a country with an incidence of 444 (Germany) declares countries like Namibia with an incidence of 3 (in words: three) or South Africa with an incidence of 9 dangerous. The German media states: In Namibia the incidence has tripled within the last two weeks. Clearly from 1 to 3. And in South Africa doubled. From 4 to 9. 

Due to this scaremongering and the resulting measures we are extremely affected. Unfortunately, there have already been the first cancellations.

But we remain confident. Here it is beautiful. The sun is shining, we are fine and there is no Corona here.

800 km in 5:33 Stunden geflogen. Das war gestern ein super Tag. Hier in Bitterwasser/Namibia wird das Wetter immer besser.

Wie üblich sind wir erst etwas später gestartet, als das Wetter sich schon gut entwickelt hatte. Wir wollen beim fliegen nicht mehr kämpfen. Und dann gings ab.

Gleich nach dem "Motor Aus" ging es mit einem Bart fast 2.000 m mit einem durchschnittlichen Steigen von 2,5 m/s nach oben. Dann ging es nach Osten. Sehr schnell waren wir am Nossob Trockenfluss angekommen. Östlich des Nossob waren schon viele Überentwicklungen zu sehen. Deshalb umdrehen Richtung Westen, Gamsberg.

Auf dem Weg dorthin hatten wir den wohl besten Bart des Tages. 1.068 m Höhengewinn mit einem integriertem Steigen von 6,1 m/s.

Kurz vor dem Gamsberg hatten wir "die Linie" erreicht. Die Linie ist eine Aufreihung von Wolken und damit Aufwinden entlang der Namibberge, genannt die Kante, weil das Gelände von dort aus Richtung Westen sehr stark zur Namib Wüste abfällt. Je nach Wetterlage geht es dann dort sehr gut. Also ab Kurs Süden. Nächster Zielpunkt Helmeringhausen.

50 km vor Helmeringhausen haben wir umgedreht. Es ist ja noch ein langer Heimweg. Also die schöne Linie nach Norden.

Um 17:15 Uhr Local haben wir entschieden den Endanflug anzutreten. In 5.400 m Höhe mit einer Ankunftshöhe 1.500 m ein völlig relaxter Vorgang, Entfernung 100 km von Bitterwasser.

40 km vor Bitterwasser war dann vorne alles dunkel. Ein großes Gewitter stand nordwestlich von Bitterwasser, ca. 10 km von Bitterwasser entfernt.

Zum Glück ließ sich das Gewitter südlich umfliegen. Aus Sicherheitsgründen haben wir dann unseren Flug sehr schnell beendet und sind sicher gelandet.

Wegen des Gewitters mussten auch zwei Teams (Kiripotib und Pokweni) bei uns landen und übernachten, da sie nicht mehr zu Ihren Heimatplätzen kamen.

800 km flown in 5:33 hours. Yesterday was a great day. Here in Bitterwasser/Namibia the weather is getting better and better.

As usual, we started a little later, when the weather had already developed well. We don't want to fight anymore when flying. And then we took off. 

Immediately after the "engine off" we went up almost 2,000 m with an average climb of 2.5 m/s. Then we headed east. Very quickly we arrived at the Nossob dry river. East of the Nossob many overdevelopments could already be seen. Therefore we turned around to the west, Gamsberg.

On the way there we had probably the best beard of the day. 1,068 m altitude gain with an integrated climb of 6.1 m/s.

Shortly before the Gamsberg we had reached "the line". The line is a string of clouds and thus updrafts along the Namib Mountains, called the edge because the terrain slopes very sharply from there westward to the Namib Desert. Depending on the weather conditions it goes there very well. So off we go to the south. Next destination Helmeringhausen.

50 km before Helmeringhausen we turned around. It is still a long way home. So the beautiful line to the north. At 17:15 Local we decided to start the final approach. At 5,400 m altitude with an arrival altitude 1,500 m a completely relaxed procedure, distance 100 km from Bitterwasser. Then 40 km before Bitterwasser everything was dark in front. A big thunderstorm was northwest of Bitterwasser, about 10 km from Bitterwasser.

Fortunately, the thunderstorm could be flown around to the south. For safety reasons, we then ended our flight very quickly and landed safely.

Due to the thunderstorm, two teams (Kiripotib and Pokweni) also had to land and stay overnight with us, as they were unable to get to their home bases.

Im vergangenen Jahr war Ende Oktober, Anfang November hier in Namibia "Hammerwetter". In diesem Jahr ist es eher mittelmäßig. Aber gestern ließ schon wieder erahnen wie es hier werden wird. Wir haben gestern nach dem Mittagessen, Start um 13:48 loc., noch 656 km mit einem Schnitt von 145 km/h geflogen.

Insgesamt haben wir sechs Flugtage hinter uns und weil Übermorgen ein richtig guter Tag kommen soll, machen wir heute einen Tag Pause. Gelegenheit diesen Blog zu schreiben.

Je brauner desto besser wird der Flugtag.

Bitterwasser ist zur Zeit voll ausgebucht. Das ist sehr ungewöhnlich für Mitte November. Aber es gibt wohl bei den Segelfliegern großen Nachholbedarf, da die letzte Saison Corona bedingt mehr oder weniger ausgefallen war. Es ist eine sehr gute Stimmung. Es ist ja auch kein Wunder, da jeden Tag geflogen werden konnte und viele, teils sehr große Flüge gemacht wurden.

Last year, the end of October, beginning of November was "hammer weather" here in Namibia. This year it is rather mediocre. But yesterday already foreshadowed how it will be here. We have flown yesterday after lunch, start at 13:48 loc., still 656 km with an average of 145 km/h.

Bitterwasser is fully booked at the moment. This is very unusual for mid-November. But there is probably a lot of pent-up demand among the glider pilots, since the last season was more or less cancelled due to Corona. It's a very good atmosphere. It is no wonder, since every day could be flown and many, partly very large flights were made.

Überfluggenehmigung ist da - Overflight permit is there

Gestern Nachmitttag sind endlich die Überfluggenehmigungen gekommen. 

Man braucht, wenn man in Namibia mit einem deutsch zugelassenen Flugzeug fliegen will, eine sogenannte Überfluggenehmigung. Das ist in Europa auch so, wenn man mit einem nicht in Europa zugelassenem Flugzeug fliegen will.

Normalerweise dauert die Beantragung und die Ausfertigung nur wenige Tage. Dieses Jahr aber gab es Probleme. Auch die Militärs müssen das Permit genehmigen. Leider fand gerade in der letzten Woche ein großes Manöver im Norden von Namibia statt und alle Militärs, die unterschriftsberechtigt sind, waren dort.

Zum Glück war in der Zeit, in der wir nicht fliegen durften, kein Hammerwetter.

Aber heute geht es los und alle sind ganz wild. Das Wetter soll auch gut werden. Also schauen wir mal.

Alles fertig aber keiner darf fliegen.

Es sind schon viele Gäste da.

Yesterday afternoon the overflight permits finally arrived. 

If you want to fly in Namibia with a German registered aircraft, you need a so-called overflight permit. This is also the case in Europe if you want to fly with an aircraft that is not registered in Europe.

Normally it takes only a few days to apply for the permit and to get it. This year, however, there were problems. Even the military has to approve the permit. Unfortunately, just in the last week there was a big maneuver in the north of Namibia and all the military who are authorized to sign were there.

Luckily there was no "hammer weather" during the time we were not allowed to fly.

But today it starts and everyone is wild. The weather is supposed to be good, too. So we'll see.

Everything is ready but no one is allowed to fly.
