Wie schnell doch die Zeit vergeht. Schon wieder 9 Tage seit dem letzten Blogeintrag.

Wir hatten eine Periode mit gutem Segelflugwetter. Wir sind ja bekanntlich nicht die wildesten Flieger. Es gibt Kameraden, die sehr sportlich sind und sich gerne morgens beim Abflug etwas quälen. Hier in Namibia geht die Thermik an normalen Tagen anfangs noch nicht sehr hoch und sie ist auch nicht stark. Mit der Erwärmung im Tagesverlauf wird es dann zunehmend besser. Will man 1.000km fliegen, dann muss man wegen des relativ kurzen Tages aber das Quälen am Anfang mitmachen.

Hier zwei Beispiele. Einmal sportlich von einem Kameraden und dann unser Flug vom 18.12.2020.

Um uns die Quälerei am Anfang zu ersparen sind wir spät gestartet. Es ging prima los und das Wetter sah wunderbar aus. Am Nachmittag um 16:00 Uhr hatten wir 500km auf der Uhr. Das ist normalerweise ein Indikator, dass am Ende des Tages 1.000km drin sein sollten. Normalerweise legen wir es nicht darauf an aber heute... 

Südlich von Kleinaub haben wir auf Bitterwasser gedreht. Die Idee war: In Bitterwasser haben wir 900km, dann fliegen wir noch 50km darüber hinaus und zurück. "Dann haben wir fertig". Zeit war genug vorhanden. Leider hat dann "Jemand" die Thermik ausgeschalten und es fehlte uns noch ein Bart. Wie auch immer es war ein schöner Flug. Die Namibkante ist landschaftlich so schön.

Außer den vielen schönen Flügen gab es aber auch noch andere Events.

Es ist die erste 1000 km Palme der Saison und weil nur eine sehr kleine Gruppe hier ist, wird es wahrscheinlich auch die letzte sein.

Am 17. Dezember nutzte Wolf-Dietrich Bornholdt das gute Wetter und erflog sich mit einer deklarierten Strecke über 1002 km das 1000km Diplom und die begehrte Bitterwasser Palme.

Am 19.12.2020 wurde dann die Palmpflanzung zelebriert.

Und warum habe ich heute Zeit den Blog zu schreiben? Es regnet und ganz Namibia freut sich. Gestern 13,4 mm und heute bis Mittag schon 11,4 mm. Wobei man hier im Süden froh ist, wenn es in der ganzen Regensaison 100mm regnet. Das scheint ein gutes Jahr zu werden.

How quickly time flies. Already 9 days since the last blog entry.

We had a period with good gliding weather. As you know, we are not the wildest flyers. There are other pilots who are very sporty and like to torture themselves a bit in the morning when taking off. Here in Namibia, on normal days, the thermals do not go very high in the beginning and they are not strong. As the day warms up, it gets better and better. If you want to fly 1,000km, then you have to go through the torture at the beginning because of the relatively short day.

To save us the torment at the beginning we started late. It went off great and the weather looked wonderful. In the afternoon at 16:00 we had 500km on the clock. That's usually an indicator that by the end of the day we should have 1,000km in. Normally we don't put it on that but today.... 

South of Kleinaub we turned to Bitterwasser. The idea was: in Bitterwasser we have 900km, then we fly another 50km beyond and back. "Then we have finished". There was enough time. Unfortunately then "someone" turned off the thermals and we were still missing on more climb. Anyway it was a nice flight. The Namib edge is so scenic.

Besides the many beautiful flights, there were also other events.

It is the first 1000 km palm of the season and because only a very small group is here, it will probably be the last one.

On December 17th Wolf-Dietrich Bornholdt took advantage of the good weather and flew a declared distance of 1002 km to get the 1000km diploma and the coveted Bitterwasser palm. 

On 19.12.2020 the palm planting was celebrated.
