In den letzten Wochen ist die Zeit vergangen wie im Fluge.

Ja Fliegen. Wir sind auch geflogen und hatten schöne Flüge. Aber der Ehrgeiz, große und lange Flüge zu unternehmen, ist raus. Drei bis fünf Stunden reichen.

Neben dem Fliegen gab es hier auch die eine oder andere schöne Begebenheit.

24.12.2022 Heiligabend

Noch nie waren so viele Gäste zu Heiligabend in Bitterwasser, wie in diesem Jahr. 62 Gäste hatten an drei langen Tischen ein sehr fürstliches Fünfgangmenü.

30.12.2022 Nils Fecker fliegt sein 1.000km Diplom.

Nils ist der Enkel von Rudi Fecker. Mit Rudi hat Wolfgang in Langenfeld viele, viele Jahre im Verein verbracht. Auch jetzt treffen wir uns noch einmal im Jahr zum Wandern. Deshalb war die Freude besonders groß als Nils am 29.12 2022 sein Diplom und damit eine Palme erfliegen konnte. Für das 1.000km Diplom muss er 1.000km um drei vorher angemeldete Wendepunkte fliegen. Das Anmelden der Wendepunkte macht die Sache so schwer. Gemäß den Gesetzen von Murphy liegen die Wendepunkte immer im Regen oder es ist blau. Eine schöne Palmpflanzungszeremonie hat sich angeschlossen.

31.12.2022 Silvester

Auch bei der Silvesterfeier waren so viele Gäste wie noch nie anwesend. Einem sehr leckeren 5-Gang Menü schloss sich eine kleine Zeremonie an, in der den vielen Angestellten gedankt wurde. Kurz vor Mitternacht wechselten wir an den Tower neben dem Windsack an die dort aufgebaute Bar. Pünktlich gab es dann ein schönes Feuerwerk.

06.01.2023 Moonrise und Sunset

Immer bei Vollmond geht die Sonne im Westen unter und Zeitgleich geht im Osten der Mond auf.

Meistens sind aber im Osten viele Wolken, weshalb das Schauspiel nicht so wirkungsvoll ist. Aber nicht heute. Der Osten ohne Wolken und ein Tag an dem nur wenige Piloten geflogen sind. Also kurzfristig organisiert. Viele Gäste am Dunehouse. Ein sehr schöner Event.

09.01.2023 Serge in Bitterwasser

Serge hatte sich als Erster gemeldet nachdem wir unseren ARCUS zum Verkauf angeboten hatten.

Jetzt ist er gekommen um sich das Flugzeug anzusehen. Wir sind auch zusammen geflogen. Mit dem Ergebnis, dass er den Arcus gekauft hat und Er nächstes Jahr damit nach Bitterwasser kommen will.

Alles zusammen eine sehr erfreuliche Sache.

24.12.2022 Christmas Eve

There have never been so many guests for Christmas Eve in Bitterwasser as this year. 62 guests had a very princely five course meal at three long tables.

30.12.2022 Nils Fecker flies his 1.000km diploma.

Nils is the grandson of Rudi Fecker. Wolfgang spent many, many years in the club with Rudi in Langenfeld. Even now we meet once a year for hiking. Therefore the joy was particularly large when Nils on 29.12 2022 his diploma and thus a palm tree could plant. For the 1,000km diploma he has to fly 1,000km around three previously registered turning points. The registration of the turning points is what makes it so difficult. According to Murphy's laws, the turnpoints are always in the rain or it's blue. A nice palm planting ceremony has followed.

31.12.2022 New Year's Eve

There were also more guests than ever at the New Year's Eve celebration. A very delicious 5-course meal was followed by a small ceremony thanking the many employees. Shortly before midnight we moved to the tower next to the windsock to the bar set up there. Right on time there was a beautiful fireworks display.

06.01.2023 Moonrise andSunset

When the moon is full, the sun sets in the west and the moon rises in the east.

Mostly, however, there are many clouds in the east, which is why the spectacle is not so effective. But not today. The east without clouds and a day on which only a few pilots flew. So organized at short notice. Many guests at the Dunehouse. A very nice event.

09.01.2023 Serge in Bitterwasser

Serge was the first to contact us after we offered our ARCUS for sale.

Now he came to have a look at the airplane. We also flew together. With the result that he bought the Arcus and he wants to come to Bitterwasser with it next year.

Nach fünf Wochen endlich mal wieder ein Eintrag. - After five weeks finally an entry again.

Etwas schreibfaul bin ich. Deshalb hat es in den letzten Wochen keinen Eintrag mehr in diesem Blog gegeben. Aber jetzt!

Was war in den letzten Wochen hier so los.?

Es verlief eigentlich alles nach Plan. Es wurde sehr viel geflogen, geredet und gegessen. Besondere Vorkommnisse gab es zum Glück nicht. Allerdings die eine oder andere Episode.

- Drei Nächte im Eurowings Flugzeug.

Einer unserer Gäste hatte zur Einreise in Namibia nur den Personalausweis mit. Das ging natürlich nicht. Wie er, nur mit Personalausweis, ins Flugzeug kam, bleibt allen ein Rätsel. Auf jeden Fall durfte er den Flughafen nicht verlassen und musste Abends mit Eurowings zurück nach Deutschland fliegen. Dann nach Hause, Reisepass holen und am Abend wieder mit Eurowings nach Namibia. Wo er dann ohne weiteren Probleme einreisen konnte. Man kannte Ihn ja bereits. Und das passierte einem Schwaben.

- Sonnenuntergang und Mondaufgang.

Am 08.12.2022 war der Tag, an dem der Mond unmittelbar nach dem Sonnuntergang aufgeht. Das ist ein schönes Spektakel, besonders, wenn es im Osten, dort wo der Mond aufgeht, keine oder nur wenig Wolken hat. Solch einen Tag hatten wir zum Glück. Till hat ein sehr schönes Foto vom Mond gemacht. Eine kleine Wolke hat die Ecke erzeugt. Der Mond sieht fast aus wie das Apple Logo, der angebissene Apfel.

Ein paar Tage vorher haben wir einen Gamedrive unternommen. Dabei hat Till ein sehr schönes Foto mit einem ARCUS vor dem Mond gemacht.

- Einen Tag krank.

Irgendwie haben wir hier einen Virus im Umlauf. Es fängt an mit Magenschmerzen und das mit Durchfall und eventuell erbrechen. Zum Glück dauert es nur einen Tag und danach ist man wieder auf dem Damm. Es haben schon viele hier gehabt. Leider war ich vorgestern auch davon betroffen. Zum Glück war das Wetter aber nicht so, dass wir geflogen wären und somit war die Angelegenheit nicht so schlimm.

- Geflogen sind wir auch.

Natürlich sind wir in den letzten Wochen auch geflogen. Aber wir sind ja nicht mehr die „wilden“ Flieger. Drei bis fünf Stunden pro Tag fliegen reicht uns. Leider sieht man unterwegs immer mal wieder Feldbrände. Es hatte im Februar und März gut geregnet und dadurch ist viel Gras gewachsen, das jetzt „Strohtrocken“ ist und damit sehr leicht entzündlich.

- Feldbrand auf unserer Nachbarfarm.

In Namibia ist es noch üblich Nutzflächen für den Gemüseanbau zu brandroden. Umweltschutz mäßig müssen die hier noch viel lernen. Jedenfalls wollen die Farmer den Stickstoff der beim Brandroden entsteht unterpflügen.

Das wollte auch unser Nachbar, der Ehemann und Farmer von El-Jo, machen. Als das Feld abgebrannt war, glaubte der Farmer das Feuer sei aus und er ging mit den Mitarbeitern zum Lunch. Währen El-Jo den Lunch servierte schaute Jemand aus dem Fenster und sah viel Qualm. Das Feuer hatte sich deutlich ausgeweitet und es blieb nur noch die Lösung Feueralarm auszurufen. Die Farmer haben eine WhatsApp Gruppe in der das organisiert wird . Durch Nachbarschaftshilfe wird dann gemeinsam das Feuer gelöscht. Unser Team von Bitterwasser war natürlich auch dabei.

Aus der Luft war am nächsten Tag das Ergebnis sehr gut zu sehen. Dass El-Jo ihren Ehemann sehr gelobt hat kann sich jeder vorstellen, der den Wirbelwind El-Jo kennt.

- Three nights in the Eurowings airplane.

One of our guests had only his identity card with him to enter Namibia. That did not work, of course. How he got on the plane with only his ID card remains a mystery to everyone. In any case, he was not allowed to leave the airport and had to fly back to Germany in the evening with Eurowings. Then home, get his passport and in the evening again with Eurowings to Namibia. Where he could then enter without further problems. They already knew him. And this happened to a Swabian.

- Sunset and moonrise.

On 08.12.2022 was the day on which the moon rises immediately after the sunset. This is a beautiful spectacle, especially if there are no or only few clouds in the east, where the moon rises. Such a day we had fortunately. Till took a very nice photo of the moon. A small cloud created the corner. The moon looks almost like the Apple logo, the bitten apple.

- One day sick.

Somehow we have a virus circulating here. It starts with stomach ache and that with diarrhea and eventually vomiting. Fortunately it lasts only one day and after that you are back on your feet. Many have had it here. Unfortunately, I was also affected the day before yesterday. Fortunately, the weather was not so that we would have flown and so the matter was not so bad.

- We also flew.

Of course we also flew in the last weeks. But we are not the "wild" flyers anymore. Three to five hours of flying per day is enough for us. Unfortunately, we see field fires every now and then on the way. It had rained well in February and March and therefore a lot of grass has grown, which is now "dry as straw" and therefore very easy to ignite.

In Namibia it is still common practice to fire-clear farmland for vegetable cultivation. They still have to learn a lot about environmental protection. In any case, the farmers want to plow up the nitrogen produced by the fire.

This is what our neighbor, El-Jo's husband and farmer, wanted to do. When the field was burned, the farmer thought the fire was out and he went to lunch with the employees. While El-Jo was serving lunch, someone looked out the window and saw a lot of smoke. The fire had clearly spread and the only solution was to sound the fire alarm. The farmers have a WhatsApp group in which this is organized . Through neighborly help, the fire is then extinguished together. Our team from Bitterwasser was of course also there.

From the air the next day the result was very good to see. That El-Jo praised her husband very much can be imagined by everyone who knows the whirlwind El-Jo.

Manchmal vergeht die Zeit wie im Fluge. Jetzt sind wir schon zwei Wochen hier in Bitterwasser und ich habe noch keinen Block geschrieben. 

Also von Anfang an:

Sonntag, der 31.10.2022 war der Abflugtermin in Frankfurt. Nach all den Nachrichten in den letzten Wochen waren wir auf ein totales Chaos auf dem Frankfurter Flughafen eingerichtet. Aber wie es oft so ist, wenn man mit dem Schlimmsten rechnet, kommt es anders. Der Flughafen war fast so leer wie zu Corona Zeiten. Niemand stand vor uns beim Check-in oder an der Sicherheitskontrolle. Überall gähnende Leere.

Der Airbus von Eurowings Discover war sehr gut gefüllt. Nur hinten gab es noch einige wenige Sitze. Der Kabinenservice war sehr gut und ließ die Probleme, die wir im Vorfeld mit dem Reservierungssystem von Lufthansa hatten, vergessen.

Der Service war sehr gut,
nur mit der Beinfreiheit hapert es.

Die Immigration verlief dieses Jahr auch ohne Probleme, was nicht jedes Jahr so war, da wir wegen des langen Aufenthaltes ein Working Visa haben. Am Kofferband musste ich aber bis zum letzten Koffer warten. 

Dieses Jahr haben wir kein eigenes Auto und sind deshalb mit Peter Eberhardt im Taxi nach Bitterwasser gefahren. Unser ehemaliger Autovermieter hat seinen Betrieb aus Altersgründen abgegeben und die neuen haben den Mietpreis vierfacht. Deshalb wollen wir mal versuchen, wie wir mit den Bitterwasser Autos klar kommen.

Ich habe in den ersten Wochen viel Zeit in unser IT-Netz gesteckt. Im letzten Januar waren durch einen Blitzschlag alle Switches und viele Kabel zerstört worden.

Am 06.11.2022 hat Bruno, aus reiner Lebensfreude, alle zu einer Sundowner Party am Dunehouse eingeladen. Das Wetter war erwartungsgemäß nicht gut, sonst wäre man ja auch geflogen und so war leider kein Sonnenuntergang zu sehen. Es war aber trotzdem ein schöner Abend. Man konnte sehr gut mit den vielen Freunden schwätzen.

Eine Puffotter am Dunehouse war schon tot.

Bei gutem Wetter (Joschko Wetter) sind wir aber auch geflogen. Besonders schön war der Flug am 11.11.2022. Direkt in der Nähe von Bitterwasser bildete sich eine Konvergenz (Wolkenaufreihung) unter der wir mit sehr wenig kurbeln schnell fliegen konnten.

Flug vom 11.11.2022

Viel Aufregung gab es am Abend. Um ca. 18:00 Uhr meldet DW, dass sie außen landen müssen.

Was war passiert?

Gerhard und Astrid waren bei dem starken Nordwestwind (50 km/h) etwas zu weit nach Süden geflogen und stellten beim Rückflug fest, dass die Thermik abbaute. Also der Entschluss, noch in größerer Höhe, den Motor raus und mit Motor auf Endanflughöhe, für ca. 78 km Endanflug, steigen. Nach ca. 2 Minuten streikte der Motor aber dann. Also Motor rein und in der Pfanne, die vorher schon als Alternate ausgesucht war, landen. Es blieb also noch genügend Zeit um die Absicht über Funk zu melden. Nach der Landung hatte Bitterwasser keinen Kontakt mehr mit den Beiden. Nach kurzer Zeit aber erfreulicherweise eine „OK, uns geht es gut.“ Nachricht über das Notfall- und Trackingsystem SPOT. Das beruhigte erst einmal.

Die beiden haben, völlig richtig, Ihr SPOT mitgenommen als sie versucht haben zu einer, drei Kilometer entfernten, Farm zu laufen. Im Flightoffice in Bitterwasser konnte das verfolgt werden.

 

Leider war die Farm verschlossen und Niemand da. Sie konnten somit nicht telefonieren. Also gingen Sie zurück zum Flugzeug und warteten dort auf Hilfe.

In Bitterwasser wurde ein Team los geschickt um die beiden aufzugabeln und nach Bitterwasser zurück zu bringen. Um 00:30 Uhr waren alle wieder in Bitterwasser. Das Flugzeug war allerdings noch draußen.

Am nächsten morgen fuhr ein Team mit einem Universalanhänger los um das Flugzeug zu bergen. Am Abend waren auch sie dann zurück. Am Folgetag wurde aufgerüstet und die Fehlersuche am Motor begann.

Alle und alles wieder gut zu Hause.

Heute, am Sonntag dem 13.11. war die Temperatur in der Nacht  nur 11°C. Viel zu kalt um einen guten Flugtag zu erwarten. Aber wir haben ja noch einige Tage vor uns.

But as it often happens, when you expect the worst, things turn out differently. The airport was almost as empty as in Corona times. No one was standing in front of us at check-in or at the security checkpoint. Everywhere yawning emptiness.

The Airbus of Eurowings Discover was very well filled. There were only a few seats in the back. The cabin service was very good and made us forget the problems we had in advance with Lufthansa's reservation system.

Only with the legroom it was small.

Immigration was also without problems this year, which was not every year, because we have a working visa because of the long stay. But at the baggage carousel I had to wait until the last suitcase. 

This year we don't have our own car and so we went to Bitterwasser with Peter Eberhardt in a cab. Our former car rental company has given up its business due to age and the new ones have quadrupled the rental price. Therefore we want to try how we get along with the Bitterwasser cars.

I spent a lot of time on our IT network in the first few weeks. Last January all switches and many cables were destroyed by a lightning strike.

On 06.11.2022 Bruno, out of pure joy of life, invited everybody to a sundowner party at the Dunehouse. As expected the weather was not good, otherwise we would have flown and so unfortunately there was no sunset to see. But it was still a nice evening. One could chat very well with the many friends.

But we also flew in good weather (Joschko weather). Especially nice was the flight on 11.11.2022. Directly near Bitterwasser a convergence (cloud line-up) formed under which we could fly fast with very little cranking.

There was a lot of excitement in the evening. At about 18:00 DW reported that they had to land outside.

What had happened?

Gerhard and Astrid had flown a little too far south in the strong northwest wind (50 km/h) and noticed on the return flight that the thermals were breaking down. So the decision, still at higher altitude, the engine out and climb with engine on final approach altitude, for about 78 km final approach. After about 2 minutes, however, the engine then went on strike. So engine in and land in the pan, which had been selected as alternate before. So there was still enough time to radio the intention. After the landing Bitterwasser had no more contact with the two. After a short time, however, fortunately an "OK, we're fine." message via the SPOT emergency and tracking system. That reassured for the time being.

The two, quite correctly, took their SPOT with them when they tried to walk to a farm three kilometers away. This could be tracked in the flight office in Bitterwasser.

 

Unfortunately, the farm was locked and no one was there. So they could not make a phone call. So they went back to the plane and waited there for help.

In Bitterwasser a team was sent to pick them up and bring them back to Bitterwasser. At 00:30, everyone was back in Bitterwasser. However, the plane was still outside.

The next morning a team with a universal trailer drove off to recover the airplane. In the evening they were back as well. The following day they rigged up and started troubleshooting the engine.

All participants and everything back home safe.

Today, Sunday the 13.11. the temperature was only 11°C during the night. Much too cold to expect a good flying day. But we still have a few days to go.

Alles hat ein Ende, auch unser 4,5 monatiger Aufenthalt in Namibia.

Die letzten Tage habe ich damit verbracht einige Arbeiten an der IT Anlage durchzuführen. Schließlich habe ich ja ein Working Permit. Dann muss man ja auch mal arbeiten. Christa hat in der Zeit relaxed.

Es war besser diese Arbeiten jetzt durchzuführen, wo das Flightoffice nicht gebraucht wird.

Am 27.02.2022 geht es mit Eurowings zurück nach Deutschland.

Zusammenfassung

Die Entscheidung auch dieses Jahr wieder hier zu überwintern haben wir keinen Tag bereut. Wir haben schöne Flüge durchgeführt, auch wenn wir nur selten in den Westen fliegen konnten. Zwei sehr schöne Touren sind durchgeführt worden und nebenbei habe ich noch einiges an der IT Infrastruktur verbessern können.

Viele nette Leute hatten wir hier zu Besuch und es wurden sehr schöne und anspruchsvolle Gespräche geführt.

Und: Corona war hier nicht wirklich ein Problem.

Summary

The decision to stay during winter here again this year we have not regretted a day. We have carried out beautiful flights, even if we could fly only rarely in the west. Two very nice tours were made and besides I was able to improve some of the IT infrastructure.

We had a lot of nice people visit us and we had very nice and challenging conversations.

And: Corona was not really a problem here.
