24.11.und 25.11.2023 Durch die Zambesi Region (ex.Caprivi) ging es heute bis in den Mudumu Nationalpark. Unser Ziel ist die Namushasha Lodge https://store.gondwana-collection.com/accommodation/namushasha-river-lodge

Bisher waren wir in den Lodges fast immer alleine. Hier aber ist Hochbetrieb. Zwei Busse!!

Es wird aber dadurch nicht eng und auch am Buffet, das sehr gut ist, wird nicht gedrängelt.

Von unserer Terrasse aus schauen wir direkt auf den Okawango.

Im Fluss halten sich mehrere Flusspferde (Hippos) auf. Es ist lustig, wenn sie auftauchen um Luft zu holen und ihre Ohren drehen um das Wasser rauszuschleudern.

Am zweiten Nachmittag haben wir eine Bootstour gemacht.

Auf dieser Tour haben wir auch wieder Hippos und ein Krokodil gesehen.

24.11.and 25.11.2023 Today we travelled through the Zambesi region (ex.Caprivi) to Mudumu National Park. Our destination is the Namushasha Lodge https://store.gondwana-collection.com/accommodation/namushasha-river-lodge

So far we have almost always been alone in the lodges. But here it is very busy. Three buses!

But it's not too crowded and there's no pushing at the buffet, which is very good.

From our terrace we have a direct view of the Okawango.

There are several hippos in the river. It's funny when they come up for air and turn their ears to throw out the water.

On the second afternoon we went on a boat trip.

On this tour we also saw hippos and a crocodile again.

22.11.und 23.11.2023 Heute ging es weiter. In Richtung Caprivi Streifen bis zu den Popa Falls. Richtigerweise müsste es Zambesi Region heißen. Namibia hat den Namen Caprivi gestrichen, da es sich um den deutschen Reichskanzler vor dem ersten Weltkrieg handelte. Die Geschichte Deutschlands als Kolonialmacht ist ja bekannt und nicht löblich.

Wer bei Popa Falls an einen richtigen Wasserfall glaubt wird enttäuscht. Wir waren vor 15 Jahren schon mal hier und entsprechend gering waren unsere Erwartungen. Die Popa Falls sind nett, ca. 5m Gefälle und schön.

Als Lodge hatten wir das Popa Fall Resort https://www.nwr.com.na/resorts/popa-falls-resort/.

Diese Lodge gehört zu NWR. Das ist die staatliche Organisation. Normalerweise meiden wir NWR Lodges. Dieses mal war es aber ok. Die Anlage selbst war ziemlich neu und sehr großzügig. Wir hatten ein super großes Zimmer. Aber die Mitarbeiter sind Staatsangestellte. Entsprechend motiviert sind sie. Als Beispiel der Zustand der Liegen am Pool. Solch ein Bild könnte man auf privaten Lodges nicht machen.

Wir haben hier für zwei Tage gebucht und deshalb konnten wir sehr gut relaxen.

Einen Gamedrive wollten wir uns nicht entgehen lassen. Erst waren wir nicht begeistert, Anfahrt zum Park 15 Minuten über den Highway mit 60km/h auf dem offenen Wagen, über eine Stunde durch kaputten Wald, hier gibt es viel zu viele Elefanten und dann jede Menge Ruinen und Schrott von der ehemaligen Südafrikanischen Militärbasis.

Aber dann: Da lag ein männlicher Löwe. Solch ein Prachtexemplar haben wir bisher noch nicht gesehen. Dafür hat sich der Gamedrive gelohnt.

22.11.and 23.11.2023 Today we continued. In the direction of the Caprivi Strip to Popa Falls. Correctly it should be called Zambesi region. Namibia has dropped the name Caprivi, as it was the German Reichskanzler before the First World War. Germany's history as a colonial power is well known and not laudable.

Anyone expecting a real waterfall at Popa Falls will be disappointed. We were here 15 years ago and our expectations were correspondingly low. The Popa Falls are nice, about 5 metres drop and beautiful.

Our lodge was the Popa Fall Resort https://www.nwr.com.na/resorts/popa-falls-resort/.

This lodge belongs to NWR. This is the state organisation. Normally we avoid NWR lodges. But this time it was ok. The facility itself was fairly new and very spacious. We had a super large room. But the staff are state employees. They are correspondingly motivated. For example, the condition of the sunbeds by the pool. You couldn't get a picture like this at private lodges.

We booked here for two days and were therefore able to relax very well.

We didn't want to miss out on a game drive. At first we weren't enthusiastic, it took 15 minutes to get to the park via the highway at 60km/h in an open car, over an hour through broken forest, there are far too many elephants here and then lots of ruins and scrap from the former South African military base.

But then: there was a male lion. We have never seen such a magnificent specimen before. The game drive was well worth it.

21.11.2023 Wieder eine große Strecke Teerstraße, 320km. Wie schon im letzten Blog geschrieben, ist das zwar nicht so schön wie Gravel Road, aber wir wollen ja weit hoch in den Nordosten von Namibia. Da muss man schon mal Kilometer machen.

Die Taranga Safari Lodge ist eine Tended Lodge. Also eine Lodge in der die Zimmer Zelte sind. Diese sind zwar geräumig und gut ausgestattet, aber die Tended Lodges haben meistens keine Klimaanlagen, was im Hochsommer die Zimmer sehr warm macht. Einschlafen war deshalb erst gegen zwei Uhr möglich.

Ansonsten war es eine schöne Anlage, gutes Essen und ein paar Gäste aus Deutschland und England, mit denen man sich gut unterhalten konnte.

21.11.2023 Another long stretch of tarred road, 320km. As we wrote in the last blog, it's not as nice as a gravel road, but we want to go far up into the north-east of Namibia. You have to put in the kilometres.

Taranga Safari Lodge is a Tended Lodge. In other words, a lodge where the rooms are tents. Although these are spacious and well-equipped, most of the tended lodges do not have air conditioning, which makes the rooms very warm in the height of summer. It was therefore only possible to fall asleep at around two o'clock.

Apart from that, it was a nice place, good food and a few guests from Germany and England with whom we had a good chat.

20.11.2023 Heute war eine große Strecke Teerstraße angesagt, 340km. Das ist zwar nicht so schön wie Gravel Road, aber wir wollen ja weit hoch in den Nordosten von Namibia. Da muss man schon mal Kilometer machen.

Die Guestfarm Ghaub Ghaub Nature Reserve & Farm | Your oasis in the Otavi mountains (ghaub-namibia.com) ist aus einer ehemaligen Missionsstation entstanden. Es gab viel Historisches. Der erste Eindruck bei der Ankunft ließ uns überlegen, ob wir weiter fahren sollten. Eine eingefallene Mauer und eine Rezeption in einer unaufgeräumten Garage. Dann aber überzeugte ein großes, freundliches Zimmer in einer weitläufigen Parkanlage. Zig Warzenschweine wohnten in der Anlage, waren aber trotzdem sehr scheu. Mehr als 10m ließen sie einen nicht ran kommen.

Wir waren die einzigen Gäste.

20.11.2023 Today was a long stretch of tarred road, 340km. It's not as nice as gravel road, but we want to go far up into the north-east of Namibia. You have to put in the kilometres.

The Ghaub guest farm was created from a former mission station. There was a lot of history. Our first impression on arrival made us wonder whether we should continue our journey. A collapsed wall and a reception desk in an untidy garage. But then we were won over by a large, friendly room in a spacious park. There were dozens of warthogs living in the grounds, but they were still very shy. They wouldn't let you get closer than 10 metres.

We were the only guests.

Erste Etappe, Okahandja - First stage, Okahandja

Die erste Etappe am 19.11.2023 unseres Ausfluges in Namibia führte uns nach Okahandja.

Gestern sind Birgitta, Wolf-Dietrich und Niklas angekommen und werden die nächsten 14 Tage intensiv den ARCUS BW fliegen. Wir haben für diese Zeit einen Ausflug in den Norden Namibias geplant.

Die heutige Wegstrecke (330km)

Da die Strecke nach Okahandja nicht allzu lang ist, haben wir uns entschieden, wie so oft, nicht die Hauptstraße, sondern die Nebenstraßen Kategorie D zu fahren. Es war landschaftlich eine sehr schöne Strecke. Darüber hinaus haben wir viele Tiere, vor allem Kudus gesehen.

Vor ein paar Tagen hat es hier offensichtlich geregnet, denn ein erstes Wasserloch war zu passieren. In diesem Fall nicht der Rede wert.

Übernachtet haben wir im Okahandja Country Hotel, https://www.okahandjahotel.com/en/

Das Hotel ist sehr gut und preiswert. Selbst auf den Zimmern gab es WLAN. Das Abendessen war sehr gut. Nach dem hervorragendem Essen in Bitterwasser hatten wir uns für eine simple Pizza entschieden. Aber die war exzellent.

Morgen geht es weiter, leider die Hauptstraße entlang, bis hinter Otavi.

The first leg of our trip to Namibia on 19 November 2023 took us to Okahandja.

Birgitta, Wolf-Dietrich and Niklas arrived yesterday and will be flying the ARCUS BW intensively for the next 14 days. We have planned a trip to the north of Namibia for this time.

As the route to Okahandja is not too long, we decided, as we often do, not to take the main road but the category D side roads. It was a very scenic route. We also saw lots of animals, especially kudus.

It had obviously rained here a few days ago, as we passed our first waterhole. Not worth mentioning in this case.

The hotel is very good and reasonably priced. There was even WLAN in the rooms. Dinner was very good. After the excellent meal in Bitterwasser, we opted for a simple pizza. But it was excellent.

Tomorrow we continue our journey, unfortunately along the main road until after Otavi.

Kleine Regenzeit und Erkältung - Little rainy season and a cold

Ende Oktober Anfang November ist in Namibia die „Kleine Regenzeit“. So jedenfalls nennen die Namibier die Zeit. Nachmittags kommen gerne ein paar Schauer und Gewitter, was für uns Flieger nicht schön ist, in Namibia aber ersehnt wird. So hatten wir in den letzten Tagen 2mm Niederschlag. Nicht viel, aber hier wurde von den Einheimischen gejubelt. Seit März der erste Regen!

Für uns bedeutete das, nicht fliegen. Wir mögen es nicht, ständig auf der Hut zu sein ob ein Schauer kommt. Andere Piloten sehen das anders und so wurde doch einiges geflogen, aber keine großen Strecken. 

Am 18.11.2023 war Hammerwetter angesagt und es war auch so. Leider habe ich mich beim letzten Flug erkältet. Am Boden knapp 40 Grad in 5.000m Höhe Null Grad und immer noch die Lüftung an. Das Ergebnis: Erkältung. Also nicht fliegen.

Am 19.11.2023, also heute, beginnt unsere erste Namibia Tour in dieser Saison. Wir wollen hoch in den Nord-Osten, in die Okawango Region.

The end of October and beginning of November is the "little rainy season" in Namibia. At least that's what the Namibians call it. In the afternoon there are often a few showers and thunderstorms, which is not nice for us flyers, but is longed for in Namibia. We have had 2mm of rainfall in the last few days. Not much, but the locals here were cheering. The first rain since March!

For us, that meant no flying. We don't like to be constantly on the lookout for a shower. Other pilots see it differently and so we flew quite a bit, but no long distances. 

The weather on 18.11.2023 was forecast to be great and it was. Unfortunately, I caught a cold on the last flight. Almost 40 degrees on the ground at an altitude of 5,000m, zero degrees and the ventilation was still on. The result: a cold. So no flying.

Our first Namibia tour of the season starts on 19.11.2023, i.e. today. We want to head up to the north-east, to the Okawango region.

Der erste Eintrag im Blog in der Saison 2023/24

Viele Freundinnen und Freunde haben uns aufgefordert, mehr und öfters den Blog zu füttern. 

Das wollen wir dann diese Saison auch machen.

Dieses Jahr ein neues Flugzeug.

Wir haben unseren ARCUS mit dem Wettbewerbskennzeichen 8F im Frühjahr 2023 verkauft, weil Christa und ich nicht mehr so viel fliegen wie früher.

Ein befreundetes Ehepaar von uns, Birgitta und Wolf-Dietrich geht es ähnlich. Auch sie haben nicht mehr so viel Drive beim Fliegen. Im vergangenen Jahr hatte die Beiden ihren ARCUS nicht nach Bitterwasser gebracht, da es sich, nach Ihrer Aussage, für Sie bei nur vier Wochen Aufenthalt nicht lohnt. Sie hatten im vergangenen Jahr einen anderen ARCUS gechartert. 

Nun ist es aber so, dass man lieber das eigene Flugzeug fliegt. Aus diesen Gedanken heraus entstand das Agreement zwischen Birgitta, Wolf-Dietrich und uns, Ihren ARCUS doch nach Bitterwasser zu bringen. So können wir Alle fliegen.

Im Laufe des letzten Jahres hat sich der neue Eigentümer der 8F, Serge, entschlossen nach Bitterwasser zu kommen und die 8F auch hierhin zu verschiffen. Also ist unsere alte 8F auch hier. 

Soweit zur Vorgeschichte.

Am 09.11.2023 wollten wir ab Frankfurt mit Discover Airlines fliegen. Wir hatten den Rückflug für den 19.02.2024 gebucht. Das war ein Problem! Discover wollte uns nicht einchecken, da der Rückflug mehr als 90 Tage nach dem Hinflug gebucht ist. Also mussten wir den Rückflug umbuchen. Vom 19.02 auf den 07.02. 

Zur Erklärung: In Namibia gilt: 90 Tage pro Kalenderjahr ohne Visum. Wir wollten also 52 Tage in 2023 und 50 Tage in 2024 in Namibia bleiben. Das schaffte der Computer bei Discover leider nicht.

Zurück zum Serviceschalter der Lufthansa in Halle A, der Abflug der Discovery ist Halle C, dauerte es 1,5 Stunden von dem Moment an, wo wir dem Mädel am Schalter unser Ansinnen, Umbuchen eines Fluges gegen 250€ vom 19.02 auf den 07.02, vortrugen. 

Danach wieder „Trippel die Trappel“ zurück in Halle C und einchecken.

Endlich geschafft. Zum Glück früh genug gewesen.

Der Flug selbst verlief ohne Probleme. Der Bordservice bei Discover war schon immer sehr gut. Allerdings fliegen wir Business.

An der Immigration hatten wir die erwarteten Probleme. In den letzten Jahren hatten wir im Pass immer ein Working Permit, weil wir ja hier auch arbeiteten. Und jetzt wollten wir als Touristen einreisen, was die „freundlichen“ Damen an der Immigration anzweifelten. Nach intensiver Diskussion und der Vorlage der Rechnungen für die Übernachtungen, die wir schon gebucht hatten, durften wir dann einreisen.

Auto abholen, schnell ein wenig einkaufen (Windhoek Lager) und zurück zum Flughafen um einen Freund, der mit dem zweiten Flug ankam, abzuholen.

Kurz nach Mittag kamen wir dann endlich in Bitterwasser an und die Begrüßung durch unsere Freunde hat uns sehr gut getan.

Am nächsten Tag 11.11.2023, war Flugzeug vorbereiten angesagt. Es dauert seine Zeit bis alles zusammen ist und die diversen Kisten gefunden und sortiert sind.

Am 12.11.2023 stellten wir den ARCUS D-KCBW in die Repairline in den Schatten. Wir bauten die Sauerstoffanlage ein, machten ein Update des LX9000 (Bordcomputer) und schlussendlich eine Sitzprobe.

Der erste Flugtag war der 13.11.2023. Es war ohnehin kein Hammertag vorhergesagt und so nutzten wir den Flug für einen Systemcheck. An das LX9000 müssen wir uns noch gewöhnen. In der 8F hatten wir pocket*StrePla.

Auch den 14.11.2023 nutzten wir zum Fliegen. Wie bei uns üblich starten wir nach dem Mittagessen. Ein Flug von 3 ½ Stunden mit einer maximalen Höhe von 5.000m und guten Steigwerten war sehr schön und ein Genuss. Danke an unsere Freunde, Birgitta und Wolf-Dietrich, die uns ihren ARCUS zur Verfügung stellen.

Heute am 15.11.2023 wollen wir mal nichts tun, außer Blog schreiben.

The first entry in the blog in the 2023/24 season

Many friends have asked us to feed the blog more often. 

We want to do the same this season.

A new aircraft this year.

We sold our ARCUS with the competition registration 8F in spring 2023 because Christa and I no longer fly as much as we used to.

A couple of friends of ours, Birgitta and Wolf-Dietrich, are in a similar situation. They no longer have as much drive when flying either. Last year, they didn't bring their ARCUS to Bitterwasser because, according to them, it wasn't worth it for them to stay up to four weeks. They had chartered another ARCUS last year. 

Now, however, you prefer to fly your own aircraft. With this in mind, Birgitta, Wolf-Dietrich and we agreed to bring your ARCUS to Bitterwasser after all. So we can all fly.

In the course of last year, the new owner of the 8F, Serge, decided to come to Bitterwasser and ship the 8F here too. So our old 8F is here too. 

So much for the back story.

On 09.11.2023 we wanted to fly from Frankfurt with Discover Airlines. We had booked the return flight for 19.02.2024. That was a problem! Discover didn't want to check us in because the return flight is booked more than 90 days after the outbound flight. So we had to rebook the return flight. From 19.02 to 07.02. 

To explain: In Namibia, the rule is: 90 days per calendar year without a visa. So we wanted to stay in Namibia for 52 days in 2023 and 50 days in 2024. Unfortunately, the computer at Discover didn't manage that.

It took us 1.5 hours to get back to the Lufthansa service desk in Hall A, Discovery's departure is Hall C, from the moment we presented the girl at the desk with our request to rebook a flight from 19.02 to 07.02 for €250. 

Then "Trippel die Trappel" back to hall C and check in.

 Finally done. Luckily it was early enough.

The flight itself went without a hitch. The in-flight service at Discover has always been very good. However, we were flying Business.

We had the expected problems at immigration. In previous years, we always had a working permit in our passport because we also worked here. And now we wanted to enter as tourists, which the "friendly" ladies at immigration doubted. After intensive discussion and presenting the invoices for the overnight stays we had already booked, we were allowed to enter the country.

We picked up the car, did a bit of shopping (Windhoek Lager) and went back to the airport to pick up a friend who was arriving on the second flight.

Shortly after midday we finally arrived in Bitterwasser and the welcome from our friends did us a lot of good.

The next day, 11.11.2023, it was time to prepare the plane. It takes time to get everything together and to find and sort the various boxes.

On 12.11.2023, we put the ARCUS D-KCBW in the repair line in the shade. We installed the oxygen system, updated the LX9000 (on-board computer) and finally did a seat test.

The first day of the flight was 13.11.2023. It wasn't forecast to be a great day anyway, so we used the flight for a system check. We still had to get used to the LX9000. We had pocket*StrePla in the 8F.

We also used 14.11.2023 to fly. As usual, we took off after lunch. A flight of 3 ½ hours with a maximum altitude of 5,000m and good climb rates was very nice and a pleasure. Thanks to our friends Birgitta and Wolf-Dietrich for making their ARCUS available to us.

Today on 15.11.2023 we want to do nothing but write a blog.
